Race # 13
Vern Brown
Took top honors Saturday night at Lake Geneva Speedway winning both the Heat and Feature races. That brings Vern to four Feature wins for 05. It was a full moon Night!

August 19, 2005, Lake Geneva Speedway Report: link > By Dale R. Erdmann < link
Veteran driver Vern Brown of Waunakee could have taken a clean sweep, if problems hadn’t taken him out of qualifying. But winning the heat and winning the 20 lap feature for the Formula Indy
cars, for a back of the pack start in each event.

FIRA report; It was another exciting/strange, Friday night at Lake Geneva Speedway as FIRA went up to qualify.
First out was Vern Brown, he's on the gas, the green, and then, ?       slows to a stop? After the # 1 cars exit it was on with the show with #37 Grant Greenfield setting fast time for the evening.
Next was the 4 lap Fast cars Dash, inverted. 14 & 11 followed by the 58 & 37.
Green, into turn one and #11 Deron DeBoer into first. Four laps latter, at the checkered it was all Deron DeBoer.

The Heat begins as a full moon is rising, with ten cars for ten laps.
Green flag to Joline Slomka in the #8 on pole with #99 Jim Bass on the outside and into turn one and a blur of color as nine cars try to better their positions all at the same time, out of two, it's Jim Bass first followed by Kai McNulty's 14.
Kai eventually takes the leed from Jim, then along about lap four the moons effects start to show just as Vern Brown takes the 1 car into the leed, behind him at a distance, the Dash winner Deron DeBoer takes his 11 car, hard, into the tire stack at the end of turn four, yellow.
Deron is ok! the same cannot be said for his car it's done for the evening.

On the restart Vern takes off leaving the fight for second and third to Kai, John Zeilinga 58 , Anthony Wallace 9 and Grant Greenfield.
On lap eight Grant gets around Anthony for fourth and goes after John who is trying to find a way around Kai, confused yet? wait.
As the white flag waves on lap nine out the first turn Grant gets a run outside of John, John's car, down low and coming off turn two the rear end brakes loose and John does a pirouette, backwards into the back straight with Anthony following Grant high outside of John, who never lifted, then finishes his perfect 360 amidst his tire smoke and the grandstands applause!
Another checkered flag for Vern with Kai second, Grant third,  Anthony fourth, John (alias Spinner) fifth  and  Jim sixth, Joline (leave me out of that mess) Slomka, Chris Hibbard, Doug Farrell. and so ends the Heat?

The Feature same front row, Green Flag and Jim's into first, Joline in second Kai third.
Lap three, Vern into first, Kai second and Jim third with Grant stalking.
A few laps later it's Vern, Grant, Kai, Anthony, John (Spinner) followed by Jim then
Chris Hibbard's 33,  Joline (I vaunt to be alone) and  the #88 of Doug (I just got it back together & I want it to stay that way) Farrell.
As the checkered waves it is Vern-Grant-Kai-Anthony-John-Jim and wait it ain't over yet, Joline out of turn four gets inside Chris for seventh with Chris, eighth and Doug Farrell (it's ok, it ain't broke).
Congratulations to the 90% that made it through the night & Deron on winning the Dash (and a sorry from turn 4)

Scored his fourth Feature win This year at Columbus 151 Speedway Friday Night! The Heat winner was Vern Brown.

August 12, 2005, Columbus 151 Speedway Report: N/A

FIRA report, Eight FIRA cars put on a great show for the Columbus 151 fans last night.
Vern Brown demonstrated the speed of a FIRA car to the fans by setting a new track record of 12.893
The Heat one was a vicious dog fight for the first three laps with cars going three wide through the corners before the field settled down into single file racing. By lap 6 Vern and Grant moved from the back of the field to the front with Vern winning the heat.
The Feature was a fast 20 caution free laps. Grant started the feature on the pole and never looked back. Vern lost a chain on the start of the race. Kai and Deron kept the pressure on Grant the full 20 laps, but Grant was not to be denied the win.
Congratulations to Vern on setting quick time, a new track record and winning the heat race and to Grant on winning feature.

Vern Brown
Took the  Feature win at Rockford Speedway Saturday Night
bringing his total to 3 Feature's this season!
The first Heat, Deron DeBoer took command & won.
The second Heat was Jim Bass taking the checkered for the win.

August 6, 2005 Rockford Speedway Report. link > Excerpt from article by Kevin Ramsell < link
(Vern) Brown was your feature winner in the FIRA Formula Indy division.
John Zeilinga grabbed the early lead in the 15-lap feature event. Brown started fifth and quickly worked his way to the front. By lap 2, he was up third and then took over second by the next lap. Brown then chased down Zeilinga with four laps to go. He got on the inside of Zeilinga and the two battled for the top spot until Brown took over the top spot with two laps to go. Brown went on to the win with Deron DeBoer coming home second.

FIRA report, The FIRA Feature played to a sold out grandstand due mainly to the "Figure 8 Trailer Race of destruction" which was being video taped for later airing on Speed Vision's cable channels.
The first Heat was a strange one. The green was waved with the pace car slowly pulling off the track, right in front of the race cars, but even so Deron Deboer was able to take a commanding leed all the way to the checkered followed by Kai McNulty, Harvey Foster and Joline Deheve Slomka, driving for the still recuperating Wally Reitz in the old 8 ball. Joline is a former FIRA driver who has been racing UMARA midgets with her Father Dave and this was her first time back in a FIRA car.
The second Heat saw Anthony Wallace score the first go round with Jim Bass along side of him, then, it was Jim out front and checking out on the rest of the field on his way to take the checkered flag and the win.
Followed at a respectable distance by John Zeilinga, Vern brown & Grant Greenfield.
The Feature  was a barn burning 15 laps. The green was waved with Anthony Wallace out front into turn one, three wide, then it was John Zeilinga out of two, in front, and running wide open. John looked invincible until Vern brown completed his run from the fifth starting position to take over the lead with two to go and John looked like he was losing power. Vern got the win and the trophy which he graciously gave away to a deserving boy in the grandstands. Vern was followed by Deron DeBoer, Grant Greenfield and John Zeilinga.
The Feature I believe was recorded by the Speed Vision crew and MAY appear in their airing of the races?

Fast time Neal Gillentine at 16.461.

Race # 9
Deron DeBoer

Scored his first Feature win at the Dells Motor Speedway Saturday,
Deron becomes the fifth Feature winner in nine races.
Vern Brown was the fast qualifier.
Kai McNulty took the first Heat & Vern won the second.

July 23, 2005 Wisconsin Dell Motor speedway Report: N/A
FIRA report, What a day everyone drove through rainstorms to be at the Dells. At about 2:30 pm a bad storm passed through, black as night and poured rain, strong winds. Lasted about ½ hour and the rest of the afternoon and evening was beautiful.
The pits dried fast due to grade and the track dried fast due to the banking. All in all the afternoon rain was no problem.
Fast time was set by Vern Brown at 13.802.
Heat one was won by Kai McNulty
Heat two was won by Vern Brown.
The Feature was a fast 18 caution free laps. Jim Bass brought the field to the green flag and maintained the lead for one lap. On lap two John Zeilinga moved past on the outside to lead until lap six, then Vern Brown took the lead, but a new "shark" was swimming through the field and on lap 14 Deron Boer got inside Vern and powered by to take the lead and never looked back on the way to his first feature win.
Congratulations to Kai and Vern for winning the heat race and Deron for winning his first feature.

Grant Greenfield
Took the Feature win at Columbus 151 Speedway Friday night.
Grant's total of 3 feature wins moves him to within striking distance of the leader and defending champion,  Vern Brown who set a new track record at 13.058 & Won the Heat race. And what about John Zeilinga he isn't about to give up second or his chance for the championship.  There are seven scoring races yet to run & there are more cars who could upset the apple cart.
This is getting interesting!

July 15, 2005, Columbus 151 Speedway Report: N/A
FIRA report,
A new Columbus track record was set by Vern Brown at 13.058, Can he lower it into the twelve’s next time, we'll see.
The Heat was won by Vern Brown.
The Feature was a fast 20 laps, caution free. Grant Greenfield brought the field to the green flag with Vern Brown starting at the rear of the field by virtue of his last weeks win and he drove to the front to battle with Grant for the lead. Three laps from the checkered flag they touched, with Vern getting the worst of it. Grant never slowed, but Vern suffered a bent and jammed steering box. He made a very graceful  arc into the infield where he stopped the car. Grant was never again challenged for the lead and took the checkered flag first. Further back in the pack Deron DeBoer and Jim Bass waged a heated battle with Deron finally getting past Jim to eventually score a third.
Congratulations to Vern for winning the heat race and Grant for winning the feature.

Vern Brown
Won the Heat & Feature at Rockford Speedway Monday night.
Vern becomes the third driver to score two Feature wins for the 2005 season.
Deron DeBoer took the FIRA first heat.

July 4, 2005, Rockford Speedway. link > Excerpt from article by Kevin Ramsell < link
Vern Brown and Anthony Wallace battled all the way to the checkered flag in the FIRA division.  Kyle McNulty grabbed the early lead in the 15-lap event.  Wallace got on the outside of McNulty to take the lead on lap 3.  Wallace held on the lead until the final lap when Brown got on the inside of Wallace to take the lead.  The two ran side-by-side all the way to the finish line Brown taking it by inches.

FIRA report, Once again FIRA members were faced with the decision of will it rain or not, do I tow to Rockford and get rained out or not? At about 5pm the light rain stopped and the rest of the evening was rain free. Twelve racers braved the poor weather and made the tow to Rockford.
Dick Heath suffered drive train problems in the practice session and dropped from the show for the evening.
On a positive note we gained a new member. Harvey Foster car number 18 from MaChesney Park, IL. Welcome to our group!
Heat one was won by Deron Deboer after a spirited battle with Kai McNulty.
Heat two featured a terrific five way battle for the lead. Grant Greenfield took the early lead with Jim Bass, Vern Brown, Anthony Wallace, and John Zeilinga nipping at his heels. By lap three Vern was in the low line trying to overtake Grant when he bobbled and Jim shot in to take second place back. Vern recovered and passed Grant to take the win by several car lengths with Jim finishing second, Grant third, Anthony fourth.
The Feature was a fast 15 laps with Kai McNulty bringing the field to the green flag. Anthony Wallace and Vern Brown put on a great show battling for the win. The finish was a photo finish with Vern Brown taking the win. Further back in the pack Grant Greenfield and John Zeilinga waged a vigorous battle with Grant holding John off lap after lap.
Congratulations to Deron for his heat win and Vern for capturing both his heat and the feature and to all who took the chance, great show.

Captured the Heat & Feature at the Wisconsin Dells Speedway Saturday night. John has scored two Heat & two Feature wins for the 2005 season.
Vern Brown set FIRA's fast time for the event.

June 25, 2005 Wisconsin Dell Motor speedway Report: N/A
FIRA report, What a great race track (paved pits and roads) and perfect weather, OK, maybe a little warm. Nine cars came to race. Hats off to Keith Howard who brought two cars, Thanks Keith. Deron DeBoer joined us again after having motor problems this spring, great to have you back Deron. Deron’s brother, Doug hot lapped Keith second car and was planning to run it until Anthony Wallace suffered motor problems in the practice session and needed a car to race. Maybe we can find a race car for Doug and gain another driver? How about it Doug?
Formula Indy was the first to qualify and Vern Brown taking the pole with a quick lap of 14.796
The Heat race featured John Zeilinga jumping out front at the start and holding the field at bay the entire race.
The Feature was 18 laps with Anthony Wallace bringing the field to the green flag. Jim Bass starting on the outside pole took the lead coming out of turn two and John Zeilinga moving past Jim going into turn three. The final few laps featured a three way battle between Deron DeBoer , Jim Bass and Vern Brown. Deron and Jim battled for three laps before Deron got by Jim and coming out of turn four on the last lap Deron managed to nip Vern at the finish line by inches to take second. But no one could mount a serious challenge to John who led all 18 laps.
Congratulations to Vern on setting quick time and John for winning both the heat and feature races.

June 17, 2005 Columbus 151 Speedway Report: N/A
FIRA report, Great night, great show. The speedway featured the first of a two night series between Columbus 151 Speedway and Jefferson Speedway called the Summer Rumble. As this was an event between two area tracks the pits were packed full of racers and race cars and a large crowd in the grandstands.

Heat one featured a duel between Kai McNulty and Jim Bass for the win, with Kai prevailing for the win.
Heat two was Vern Brown holding off Grant Greenfield for the win.
The Feature was a fast 20 laps with Jim Bass bring the field to the green flag. Anthony Wallace starting on the outside pole used his awesome 2-stroke power to pull to an early lead for two laps, but Grant Greenfield was dialed in and passed Anthony for the lead on lap three. Vern Brown started at the back of the field and had worked his way up to second place by lap twelve. Grant never wavered through the remaining eight laps and was able to hold Vern off to take the feature win.

FIRA report, June 11th at Rockford was a great night of racing for the Formula Indy Racing Assoc.   It was a warm beautiful night.
Heat one featured a duel between Grant Greenfield and Kai McNulty for the lead, with Kai scoring the win.
Heat two treated the crowd to a great side by side battle for second place between Vern Brown and Jim Bass with Jim holding Vern off for second at the finish line, all the while Anthony Wallace was out front leading flag to flag.
The feature was a little different with Vern Brown jumping out to an early lead and being chased by Anthony Wallace but Vern lead all 15 laps to take the win.
Congratulations to Kai, Anthony and Vern!

Race # 2
Neal Gillentine
Took his heat & the feature win at Grundy County Speedway Friday night.
The other heat winner was Anthony Wallace.

May 28, 2005 Grundy County Speedway, Morris IL.
Anthony Wallace scored the first win of the night. Anthony took the lead early on and proceeded to check out on the rest of the field,  half way through the ten lap race he was lapping slower cars and just waiting for the checkered.
In the second Heat Vern Brown's #1 jumped into the lead at the green and held on until half way through the second lap when  Neal Gillentine's 10 car moved down and under Vern in turn three and took over. From there on Neal never looked back, taking the win with Vern Brown in second and the #58 of
John Zeilinga pulling up a strong third.
The twenty five lap feature saw the 99 of Jim Bass setting the pace for the start.
At the green  almost everyone was crowded into the first turn, then the back stretch and it was Neal out front again, followed closely by Vern Brown and
Kai McNulty's 14 car. By lap twelve Anthony Wallace moved from his eighth place starting position into third behind Vern and started looking for away around Vern's car. On lap 23 Anthony spun in turn two but recovered without bringing out a yellow, but he lost his bid for a top five finish.
Neal took home the trophy with a repeat of Vern Brown and John Zeilinga running second and third respectively
The combined show at Grundy County Speedway with UMARA Sportsman midgets, 360 Sprints, Classic modified and the FIRA  Formula Indy cars was one great night of open wheel racing at it's best.
